NYE ATTIRE
Count down to the New Year in an outfit that is playful and celebratory

Retro ties are good to pair with a buttoned shirt and will make it look like you're going to a party, rather than to the office. Not just any tie will do, find one with straight lines and without any patterns.

The little black dress is perfect for New Year's Eve. It can be paired with any color, accessory, and many different types of heels (try to avoid wearing flats to make for a dressier outfit). Strapless dresses are the latest rage, along with ruffled layers and empire waists. Remember to wear tights (any color or pattern will do) to keep you warm.

Chunky belts help add color and detail to any dress that is either form-fitting or loose. You can find colorful ones that clip or zip with different types of material. Try to avoid leather belts, since they're mainly from past seasons, and play with the color by pairing it with your shoes.

Strong shoulders are a great way to play up a simple dress you want to find. Items with shoulder pads or layers are currently hitting the runways and will even give the appearance of improved posture. Avoid necklaces with this look so there's not too much going on near the shoulders, but do find some bangles or large rings to wear.

Color is important for accessories, especially if you're already wearing neutral colors. Wear bright rings, bracelets, headpieces, and necklaces. Try to have one colorful item of jewelry, and then the rest of your items be all solid gold or silver.

Large accessories are just as important as having colorful ones. Simple, small pieces of jewelry can drown when they're worn with dressy attire. Pick loud pieces that are noticeable and will flatter your outfit, instead of trying to compete with it.

Vests are great to add to an outfit for men; they dress up buttoned shirts and will make the outfit look fun and interesting. Pair it with a different color and fabric than your pants so the look doesn't match too much.

Purses that glitter are a must. Ditch your everyday purse for the night and choose something classy. Clutches are another staple accessory for New Year's Eve, so try finding one that stands out. If you find a purse to wear for the night, get one that's slinky with a thin strap.

Most Memorable Moments of 2009

Death of Michael Jackson

It came as a complete shock when the King of Pop passed away on June 25 after going into cardiac arrest at his home in Los Angeles. An epic memorial service was held at the Staples Center with an array of celebrities who performed and spoke, as well as an estimated 31 million at home watching. The Los Angeles Coroner is now treating the death as a homicide and investigating Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's physician.

Balloon Boy Hoax

When Richard and Mayumi Heene decided to pull a prank on the public on October 15 by pretending their son, Falcon, had flown away in a homemade balloon, they really had no idea what they were getting themselves into. With the Federal Aviation Administration and the Colorado National Guard chasing the balloon, the Heenes definitely had their fifteen minutes of fame and are now ordered to pay $42,000 in services and have both been ordered jail time for 30 to 60 days.

Inauguration of Barack Obama

January 20 marked the inauguration of America's first black president and was held in Washington D.C. with the largest attendance in history for the city with 1.8 million people. A reported 21 million viewers watched from home.

Tiger Woods' Adultery

After hitting a fire hydrant next to his home in Florida at 2:30 in the morning on November 27, suspicions of infidelity began to emerge after a tabloid reported an affair Woods had with a night club owner. Within a couple of weeks, a dozen women came forward, claiming to have affairs with Woods. The golf pro then announced he was taking a hiatus from golfing and admitted to infidelity. Woods and his wife, Elin Nordegren just had their second child on February 8 of this year.

Jon and Kate Split Up

One of America's favorite reality couples announced their divorce on their hit television show, Jon and Kate Plus 8, on June 22. Suspicions of infidelity had already been circulating and their divorce was finalized on December 18, along with the cancellation of the show.

H1N1 Virus

Also known as the Swine Flu, the flu pandemic began in April of this year, with thousands of deaths reported and on April 30 the World Health Organization calling it a pandemic. It caused the country to get their flu shots and for shortages to occur, but luckily didn't get any worse.

Health Care Debate

Thousands protested in Washington D.C. in September to oppose President Obama's national health care plan that many claimed would be too expensive for the country and would eventually undermine care. It was the first public demonstration since he took office and many Obama supporters expressed disappointment for his stance.

Chris Brown Abuses Rihanna

After a night out at a party for the Grammys on February 7, Rihanna was abused by her boyfriend, Chris Brown, after she found a text message from another woman on his phone. They eventually split and Brown was ordered one year of counseling, five years of probation, and six months of community service.

Band on the Rise: Paper Tongues

Lead Singer of Paper Tongues, Aswan North, might have called it destiny when he ran into Randy Jackson at a restaurant in Los Angeles. North invited Jackson to hear their music and Jackson got a "vibe" from North so he took a chance and looked them up. He immediately signed the band to A&M/Octone Records and has since been promoting them.

Jackson says he was looking for something different and unique, and Paper Tongues had no hesitation to make it big, believing they "are going to change history." They sound like a mix between U2 and Rage Against the Machine, but have powerful lyrics with strong political messages and songs titled, "For the People" and "Rich and Poor."

Hailing from North Carolina and playing since 2007, Paper Tongues is made up of seven guys, all currently on tour with Switchfoot on The Hello Hurricane Tour. Although it's only been a year since they were signed, they're already hitting the radio with their latest single, "Ride to California" and getting their album ready to debut this summer.

Paper Tongue's music is positive and refreshing, but has a force that declares their music is here to stay in the music world. On the band's website North says, "I wouldn't want to start a revolution. I believe things only change from the inside out. I don't feel that we can change much unless we join hands with people who have already been bleeding."

The say their purpose as a band is to bring healing to people, to bad politics, and to a society that needs change. For a country seeking change, Paper Tongues is the perfect dose of music to revive the arts in a way where music and action can merge.

Singing in the New Year

Elvis Christmas

Elvis Presley's (Christmas) spirit lives on in this album with 23 songs, all explore each part of the season. He puts a lot of passion and punch in "Santa Claus is Back In Town" and embraces the tempo of the fifties with "Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me)." There's more romance and mistletoe to this album, but still has classics like, "O Come, All Ye Faithful." This is more of an album everyone will be able to enjoy.

Brad Paisley Christmas

This album is full-on country with plenty of twang and yee-has. Brad Paisley doesn't let you forget he's a country singer since it definitely feels more country than Christmas. He makes it interesting by playing original songs like "Kung Pao Buckaroo Holiday" and "364 Days to Go." Many of these tunes are slow enough to dance to, but some still have the style of Brad Paisley where you can wear your cowboy boots and dance while you decorate the tree.

Christmas In the Heart, Bob Dylan

Said to have "a voice made of sandpaper," Bob Dylan takes himself back to the old-school tunes with "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Winter Wonderland" with an album that sounds as if it's right out of a fifties Western film. There's times when Dylan's voice is noticeably struggling to keep up, but you can hear him enjoying himself with each chord and forgetting about his age.

The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection

With classics like "Santa Baby" and "Silent Night," Taylor Swift has fun showing off her talent instead of trying to make a hit. She makes the album her own by putting a country and pop twist to each of the six songs with banjos in the background and a Southern twang to her voice.

Joy to the World, Faith Hill

Faith Hill went full force in this Christmas album, having plenty of bells and trumpets. "Joy to the World" sounds as if there's a full-on orchestra by her side as she shows off her singing. "What Child Is This?" embraces the more serious tone of Christmas, almost something that's a little chilling, but "Holly Jolly Christmas" goes back to the jolly part that you can sing along to.

Christmas with Weezer

Weezer does a great job sticking to the holiday tunes, but just replacing them with electrical guitars and bass. It definitely sounds like Weezer, but isn't too much rock to where you can't get into the Christmas mood. They even sing "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." They stay true to each song they cover, but still add their own personal touch of Weezer.

Oh, Blue Christmas, A Fine Frenzy

There are few albums out there as creative as A Fine Frenzy's. She sings Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas," which sounds like she's right in the heart of his voice, and delicately sings and plays "Winter Wonderland." Her fragile and soft voice are enough to imagine snow is really falling in Southern California as you listen. A few songs even sound like wind is blowing as she plays the piano, which adds a bit of mystery to the lyrics.

Universal Studios puts on 13 Days of Grinchmas each year, having real snow to play in and a whole area of the park devoted to Christmas. The best part is that if you buy just a day pass, you get the whole year free (a great Christmas gift).

TV Review: The Hills

Season five of MTV's The Hills has officially arrived this year, says Lauren Conrad. Although it's ratings are drastically lower since LC was replaced with Kristin Cavallari, the show is still thriving off of scripted material and ritzy drama.

The show lost viewers because Lauren was always more of the girl-next-door and Kristin has already stolen her friends' men in just a few episodes. Although the show is entertaining, not much has changed since September. For a show that's not really reality television, you'd expect a little more from it. Kristin has gotten in an (almost) fight with Audrina over Justin Bobby, but Audrina's moved on now that Kristin is officially with Justin, since he doesn't want to grow up "a lonely, old man."

Speidi just bought a new house, and the couple's latest squabble is over whether to have a baby or not. Heidi's new BFF is the little boy next door, Enzo, who she plays Wii with and bakes cookies for. Although the pair is sneaky and seem to have grown up faster than the rest of the cast, it's a little endearing the way they're happily married.

Now that Kristin is the star of the show, it's a toss of the coin guessing how much viewers will continue to tune in. She's extremely hard to like and seems to only be on the show to promote her acting career. She even admitted in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that the show was scripted saying, "I pretty much do anything they have me do because I don’t care…I mean, we’re filming a TV show. Let’s make it interesting. Let’s have a good time with it."

Although it can get dirty and annoying watching snobby people steal each other’s boyfriends and drive away in their BMWs, it’s what we expect from Hollywood. I still find it a joke that MTV hosts a "Cast Confessions" episode where the cast "tells all," but I guess if we're all willing to play along that this is really reality television, then MTV will give us what we want.

The Top 10 Christmas Gifts of 2009

1. Flip Ultra HD Camcorder $150-$250
In a multimedia world of vloggers and bloggers, this handheld camcorder is trendy and small enough to carry in your pocket. It's lightweight and fun to play with, even coming with your own way of designing the front of an original Flip. Try filming something on it for your recipient so they have something fun to watch after opening it.

2. WeSC Golden Violet Headphones $55-$150

3. Chooka Buffalo Rain boots $60

It's important to be prepared for the rain in Southern California, even if it is only an inch of rainfall. Chooka Buffalo rain boots come in a lot of different styles (try boots with coy fish, or Hello Kitty ones) and are extremely comfortable. If you're strapped for cash though, you can find similar non-name brand ones at Target that won't look much different.

4. Snuggie $20

No one's too cool for a Snuggie. These beauties come in an array of three colors and will keep you warmer than a normal blanket. They're currently selling as a two-for-one deal (perfect for couples) and are even quoted as being "perfect for night time pub crawls." They also come in leopard print--and, yes, even mini Snuggies for your dog.

5. The Droid $200

With rave reviews from recent purchasers who stood in line for hours, this is the latest phone to show off. With applications that easily beat out the iPhone (like star gazing that literally names the stars above your head), the only bad part is the weight and density.

6. Juicy Couture Faux Fur Earmuffs $55

Just because you're cold doesn't mean you still can't be fashionable. Give this gift to the diva in your life to keep her little ears warm and to help her stand out. They come in three colors with a wool band.

6. Magno Radio

With an MP3 jack and AM/FM dial, this radio is something that looks like it crawled out of Where the Wild Things Are. It's made out of real wood (for each tree used for the radio, one was replanted) and was designed by Singgih Kartono.

3. DJ Hero $100

You might have seen Eminem and Jay Z in the commerical for the new DJ Hero, but the brother of Guitar Hero allows more than just those artist since it allows you to play on a turntable to over 100 songs. You can customize your own songs and do more than Guitar Hero ever offered. If you don't have much experience spinning, this might be out of your league.

7. Tom's Shoes $44

Perhaps the most charitable shoe in the world, Tom's is expanding faster than ever with their product. They offer dozens of fabrics, patterns and colors for any age. Although there's a variety of pairs, they all look extremely similar and you might be getting bored with the style, but they're still pretty reasonable at only about $44.

10. Toddland Moustache Comb $18

Perfect for the special man in your life. Nothing says love better than good hygiene. This is a great stocking stuffer or gift to pair with a mustache wallet, also made by Toddland. Avoid giving it as a joke to a woman you may know.

Christmas Films to Enjoy

A Christmas Story (1983)

Perhaps the best Christmas movie of all time, A Christmas Story is the perfect reminder of being a kid during Christmas and wanting a gift that "could shoot your eye out!" Most memorable for the leg lamp, getting your tongue stuck on a frozen pole, and for having a crazy family, this film is lighthearted and never gets old, despite your age.

A Christmas Carol (2009)

The classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge could never be remade too many times. This year, Jim Carrey plays Christmas' worst nightmare in the animated film, A Christmas Carol. With Scrooge slightly resembling Carrey's appearance, this film is a thriller with the ghosts, the pace, and the latest animation for a Christmas film. This film is extremely similar to the original story, but is still entertaining and a great story to watch once more.

Home Alone (1990)

Who could forget the infamous scream of Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, playing the role of the misfit in his family and being forgotten during Christmas. This film is original and an adventure with tarantulas, burglars, and the thrill of running the house as a kid.

The Santa Clause (1994)

Christmas isn't the same without Tim Allen, and The Santa Clause was one of his best films about trying to be both a dad, and the new Santa Clause. This film is magical and fun with it's look inside of Santa's toyshop and a chance to enjoy the sarcasm of Tim Allen trying to take on the world in one night.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

Chevy Chase doesn't do anything the normal way, including Christmas. This film always brings any family together to enjoy Chase getting electrocuted by Christmas lights and trying to endure redneck Cousin Eddie's visit. There's always something unique happening in this film and although you might not be able to relax while watching it, you'll appreciate your own family more.

Home for the Holidays (1995)

Holly Hunt plays Claudia, a woman going through a mid-life crises after being fired and having to visit her deranged family during the holidays. Her mother wears a wig, her aunt is still in love with her father, and her brother (played by Robert Downey Jr.) acts like he has ADD. Between her brother driving off every time she tries to get in the car and her emotional cookie-cutter sister having a panic attack, Home for the Holidays makes me laugh, even though I've seen it six times.

Elf (2003)

No one can forget Elf, the story of a boy going out into "the real world" from the North Pole to find his biological father. This is one of Zooey Deschanel's best performances and it's a classic because it has a little humor, a little romance, and a whole lot of Christmas.

The Truth About Hair

Long, lush locks are desired by most women in most cultures. Women are now cutting to the chase and buying their hair now. Fake hair isn't just for black people who want weaves, now anyone of another ethnicity can get it with a snap of a finger and instantly look like they've been growing their locks out for years. In Southern California, hair extensions are becoming more common and if someone has hair past their chest, it's most likely not natural.

Hair extensions come in many different forms and lengths. Natural hair is from other countries, mainly from Europe and India, and can cost anywhere from $200-$5,000, depending on if you get it done at a professional salon. The hair is treated and cleaned before it's sold and the best brands provide free color swatches. They take anywhere from four to five hours to apply and are attached to the root of the hair through different methods.

Clip-in hair is also popular, but there's a fine line on how noticable it is that it's fake. Celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton have hair extension brands, costing anywhere from $80-$400. Clip-ins are best for special events where they're easy to take out. It's still better to look for cuticle hair, as it looks much more natural. Glued hair is cheaper method (roughly $80-$200), but falls out easier and is more damaging--only lasting for about a week.

Strand-by-strand is more popular for a professional look and are what you'll find in salons. This lasts for six months, but can cost anywhere from $600-$2,500. Weaving is more popular, a method of sewing the hair into the natural hair and lasts four to six months at $400-$1,500.

Don't go overboard. Hair isn't like makeup, you don't want people to notice that you're wearing it all of the time. Don't have your hair at a length so long that people immediately recognize that it's fake. You want people to see you instead of your hair and not be able to guess that you paid big bucks for your locks.

Again, if you're not as experienced in tattooing, then try another place. You might be in over your head if you're new to getting tattooed. Also, it's higher priced and you even have to pay for consultations if you want certain artists.
