10 OC Summer Activities for $20 or less!

Here’s a list of 10 great things to do this summer for $20 or less:

  • Art-A-Fair – $7 – June 26 - August 30 – This Laguna Beach festival showcases a variety of art, such as waterfall, pastels, mixed media, drawings, furniture and pottery. And during the night the restaurant and bar, Tivoli Too has a variety of bands playing. From R&B to Dixieland bands, Tivoli has live music going on almost every night. Also, special performances and workshops of ancient Japanese paint, Sumi-e, are available. The place to be is at 777 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. Call (949)494-4515 for more details and to get tickets. ALSO, for $19 you can get a Passport to the Arts ticket. The Passport to the Arts gives you convenient access to Art-A-Fair, as well as Festival of Arts and Sawdust Art Festival all season long. With the Passport you are able to see over 500 artists at these three locations. The festivals are Sunday through Thursday, 10am-9pm and Friday through Saturday, 10am-10pm.   • 2009 OC Super Fair - $10 – July 10 - August 9 – Who doesn’t love deep fried Oreo’s and turkey legs? This year the OC Super Fair, held at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, is FIVE weeks instead of four! Wednesday - Friday: noon – midnight, Saturday - Sunday: 10 am. – midnight. This 23-day festival has everything from carnival rides to big-name concerts, animal exhibits to pie eating contests, and always a variety of food and beverage vendors. If you think you are one that will want to continually attend the county fair and you’re willing to pay $10 past our summer $20 list, the Super Pass is only $30, granting you access to the fair every day. There is even a way to get in for free on We Care Wednesdays:
    o Wednesday, July 15 is the Food Drive, noon - 6 pm. Bring five canned items and receive one free admission ticket and one carnival ride. Benefits go to the Second Harvest Food Bank and Share Our Selves.
    o Wednesday, July 22 is the Book Drive, Noon – 6 pm. One free admission ticket and one carnival ride in exchange for one NEW children’s book for grades kindergarten through third (ages 5-9). Benefits go to the OC public elementary schools via The Los Angeles Times’ Reading by 9 Program.
    o Wednesday, July 29 is the Toy Drive, noon - 6 pm. One free admission ticket and one carnival ride with donation of one new toy valued at $8 or more. One ticket/carnival ride per person. Benefits go to Share Our Selves.
    o Wednesday, August 5 is the School Supply Drive, noon - 6 pm - One free admission ticket and one carnival ride with donation of one school item valued at $5 or more. One ticket/carnival ride per person. Benefits go to the OC public schools via Rotary Club International.

  • Sand Sports Super Show - $10 - September 18 – 20 – Located at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, the Sand Sports Super Show is the West’s largest exhibition of sand sports and recreational equipment products. The show is booming with hundreds of the latest Off Road and Sand Sports products and you can enter a contest to win the latest Sand Rail vehicle! The show times are Friday the 18th, 5pm to 10pm, Saturday the 19th, 9am to 7pm and Sunday the 20th from 9am to 4pm. More info about the show can be found at www.sandsportssupershow.com
  • The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce Street Festival – FREE – August 9 – This unique family-orientated event, held from 9am until 7pm on Sunday, Aug. 9 on Avenida Del Mar in the beautiful San Clemente, is an annual festival where two blocks of the city’s downtown is shut down and dedicates to an entire day of FUN. With 45 local, non-profit service organizations the local groups provide an array of international food, refreshments and games for all ages. Activities include: food and game booths sponsored by local nonprofit organizations, three stages with continuous live music throughout the day, contests for all ages, a Salsa Challenge, arts & crafts show, kiddie rides, a classic car and motorcycle show, exhibits, clowns, jugglers, face painters and much more! Also, if you love contests – this is the place for you! There are contests for all ages, including: The Tortilla Toss, Pie Eating Contest, Hula Hoop, Diaper Derby, Easter Egg Hunt, Piñata Contest, Jump Rope, Baskin Robbins Brain Freeze Ice Cream Eating Contest and a Pickle Eating Contest.   • Crystal Casino - $20 - $10,000 guaranteed $20 buy-in no limit Texas Hold ‘Em is available at the Crystal Casino in Compton every Friday and Saturday at 7pm. The Casino is said to have “The Best Odds in L.A.!” with friendly bars to watch your favorite sports teams.   • 2009 Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival – FREE – August 1-2 – Located at the Marine Stadium in Long Beach, the exciting Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival is a race not to be missed. Located on the southeastern edge of Long Beach, this water course was created for the 1932 Olympic rowing competition. Today, the stadium is owned by the City’s Parks Recreation and Marine Department for numerous water events, classes, competitions and training. In addition to hosting one of the largest dragon boat competitions in California, there will be Chinese traditional art demonstrations, Chinese Acrobats, traditional dance, hip hop, music, martial arts performances and much more. www.lbdragonboat.com
  • S.A.M Concert Series – Summer and Music – FREE - This free two month music festival offers a variety of multiple evening and afternoon music destinations every Friday through Sunday, June through August. With a variety of venues to attend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday can each have a different taste of this summer’s hottest music.   • Shark Summer Sundays - $11.95 – Every Sunday through September 6, check out the ocean life during the summer extended hours at the Aquarium of the Pacific. You can see over 12,000 other animals and the new Shark Zone after 5 pm for just $11.95 during these Sundays. The aquarium is located at 100 Aquarium Way in Long Beach.   • Earl Burns Miller Japanese Gardens – FREE – Smell the flowers and indulge in 1.3 acres of serene tranquility at the Japanese Gardens. In memory of her late husband, Earl Burns Miller, Mrs. Loraine Miller Collins dedicated the gardens in his honor in April 1981. The contribution has since been a great getaway for all ages to enjoy a calm, relaxing walk away from the noisy city. Open Tuesday through Friday from 8am to 3:30pm and Sunday from Noon to 4pm the gardens are completely free. The Japanese Gardens are located at California State University Long Beach.   • Crawfish Festival - $13.00 – August 1-2 – Always wanted to go to New Orleans? Well the southern food and blues of Nola is coming to you in Long Beach! With the combination of tons of fresh crawfish prepared Louisiana-style – served by authentic Cajun chefs – and the best southern sounds around, a piece of Louisiana is literally coming to the OC! Located at the Rainbow Lagoon, the festival is Saturday, Aug. 1 from noon to 11pm and Sunday Aug. 2 from noon to 10pm. The entertainment list is endless with featured performances by Grammy Nominee Roddie Romero and the Hub City All-Stars on Saturday night 9-10:30pm and Grammy Nominee Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie on Sunday night 7-10pm – just to name a couple. On both Saturday and Sunday you can see appearances by the Louisiana to LA Society Second Line Dancers (led by Lewis Holt and The New Orleans High Steppers) and join the Congo line, with dance instructions provided by A.J. Gibbs and Zydeco to Myzeto – regularly available throughout the day and night. Amongst the food and music – juggling, magic, mime, origami and unicycling will be performed and a Children’s Stage will have storytelling, magicians, inflatable impressions and more from noon to 6pm on both festival days.
