GIVE YOUR JEWELRY A MAKEOVER

Lori Epner had an issue with buying jewelry--it was just all too expensive. So, she decided to start making her own.

“I thought, ‘I can make that’ and I did,” she said. “And I got such a positive response.”
That led her to making more, and a friend offering to carry some of her jewelry in a local boutique she ran. Her goal was to make jewelry that was glam with an edge--each piece one of a kind and handmade by Epner hereself.

“Things were great,” Epner said. “I couldn’t make the pieces fast enough.”

Her first collection, called “Cleeo,” debuted in December of 2008. It was inspired by “many aspects of my life: fashion, photography, my family and friends, a love of vintage and classic glamour, an obsession for jewelry and all things sparkling,” Epner said.

That collection was a bit of a throwback to Old Hollywood with vintage stones like rhinestones standing out along sterling silver, oxidized or other metal chains. Those pieces mixed feminine and tough, and quickly sold out, garnering plenty of press for Epner and instant fans.

The name was no coincidence either. “C” was for her great aunt Cece, a big influence in her life who also happened to have a great collection of coats, hats and jewelry. “LEE” are Epner’s initials. “O” is that first response a woman makes when she sees something she loves or must have, Epner said.

Just as Epner was successfully selling her pieces in her friend's boutique, the store shut its doors. Epner resorted to beginning a website where she could sell her jewelry at CleeoColletion.com.

Following “Cleeo,” Epner debuted the “Knaughty” collection this past summer, a set of knotted, woven-looking bracelets with rhinestones, stones and other charms or beads. Many of the bracelets in the collection have been inspired by friends. There’s Knaughty-Michelle and Knaughty-Lindsay, each featuring a different stone or charm mixed with edgy, tough chains. All of the jewelry sells for under $50, something Epner was very conscious of.

“I wanted to offer something that was more price-conscious, something under $50 so that people could get multiple bracelets without breaking the bank,” she said.

While sticking to the vintage glam, Epner's stretched her wings a little by creating pieces for new moms with monogrammed-initial charms of their child’s name. She also makes other custom jewelry for her customers. “Moms love it”, she said. “It’s such a cute thing to give to a new mom.”

A third line is set to debut around the holidays. It will keep with Epner’s style, but has a big retro-glam feel with dark, rich colors like burgundy, gold and black. She's still thinking of what to name the collection.

Epner's passion runs in the family, as her parents made jewelry in the 1970s, though their pieces – which were more bohemian with bone, shells and feathers – were a big contrast from Epner’s. “I like to play with textures and tones, dark and light, smooth and rough,” she said.

“It can take hours or days to make one of her pieces,” said Epner, who also handles public relations and marketing for several Orange County companies, including Analog, Gravis Footwear and Split.

It’s this work and her graphic design past that has helped her find her eye for fashion and accessories. She previously held stints at Quiksilver, Split and SG: Surf/Skate/Snow Girl Magazine. While at SG magazine, she really learned about styling and photo shoots. “It honed my eye for putting things together,” Epner said.

While she makes jewelry, Epner's still always combing through flea markets, vintage stores and elsewhere for old, big stones that give off a super glam feel. “I’ve always been obsessed with accessories, jewelry, belts,” Epner said. “And I’m always partial to vintage, even as a young girl playing dress-up in my great aunt’s hat collection.”

Starting the jewelry line filled a void she was feeling. “I found myself in a bit of a rut, feeling lackluster, like there was no creativity in my life,” she said. “I’ve always admired different types of jewelry, and I’ve always loved vintage pieces. I loved looking through my grandma’s old jewelry box.”

Epner finds inspiration just about everywhere, including living in California (she hails from Florida). She’s also tapped books on vintage jewelry and old movies as muses.

“I like to make stuff that I’d want to buy,” she said. “Or stuff I am looking for – the perfect necklace to wear with a T-shirt or cocktail dress. Or an armload of bracelets you can wear to the beach or out on a date.”

For now, all jewelry is sold via her website, but don't be surprised if you see her taking over the boutiques again with her merchandise.

10 Things Men Should Never Wear

1. Cowboy hats

Spencer Pratt may be a C-list celebrity, but he's no fashion icon. We may watch The Hills from time to time and enjoy the styles we see, but this one is a definite no-no.

2. Belts with studs

Blink-182 may have started this trend when we were in middle school, but let's leave that item in the 90s. If you want to be a punker or go ska, there's other alternatives that are still fashionable and won't remind us of Stars and Straps.

3. Tennis shoes

Tennis shoes are great, whether it be for running, playing a good game of tennis, or even for taking the dog on a walk. They look great on David Beckman and anyone else with nicely toned calves, but we don't like to see them used for anything besides exercising.

4. T-shirts that relay messages

We know you love computer games, or even being sarcastic from time to time, but we'd rather hear your humor from you instead of that black shirt you found in the discount bin at Hot Topic. If you can't part from them, you can wear them for PJs, but 86 them if you want to dress well in public.

5. Trucker hats

Sorry Ashton Kutcher, this look may have been a great money-maker for Von Dutch or Ed Hardy, but this trend has already had it's fifteen minutes of fame. There are great alternatives nowadays, like wearing a fedora or a regular baseball hat (and we'll even let you leave the sticker on that baseball hat if you want).

6. Gym shorts

Along with the running shoes, this one's a no-go. Tony Romo may be allowed to wear them out in public, and even if you love sports then more power to you, but gym shorts look lazy and like you rolled out of bed. They usually come in terrible colors and styles and won't match with any ordinary shirt, so only wear them if you're going to do some physical activity. We're just not a fan of mesh.

7. Leather

Just because leather jackets are in for women right now, doesn't mean men should buy them too. Although Forever 21 may differ in opinion, leather doesn't make a guy look as sexy as some men might want to believe. It reminds us that you're trying really hard to look good, and if that's the case then still leave the leather to bikers or greasers.

8. Muscle shirts

We're sorry to all the men of OC who might be offended, but this is a look we promise you'll regret in a few years. Even if you're sporting a wife beater, or you just ripped off the sleeves to your favorite tee, this look is not, nor will be, in style. If you're trying to get rid of your farmer's tan at the beach, there's other methods, like taking your whole shirt off.

9. Jeans with chains attached to the wallets

Sadly, this can still be seen in populated malls and at the local bar. Although we're highly aware that it protects your wallet from getting stolen, it's worth the risk so that we don't have to see that silver chain dangling above your thigh. We know they sell for great deals at The Orange County Swapmeet, but resist the urge for the sake of your style.

10. Makeup

Although you don't see you're average Joe at the local supermarket sporting your favorite eyeliner, we're nervous that men wearing makeup is going to take the fashion world by storm. It's great that men have gained enough confidence to wear makeup, but it was never made for men to wear. It makes us feel men only look like we do and it takes the fun out of being feminine.

Keep Yourself Warm
Refreshing coats to get comfy in

Nothing says it's getting cold outside like wearing a classic black pea coat. This look is something you can wear year after year and looks great with boots and fingerless gloves. This year detachable hoods are popular for this common coat and it's great for either guys or girls.

Huge collars are in this season. Go for a chunky coat that stands out and rests just below your jawline. You can wear this with skinny jeans and flats. Try not to wear anything extreme or big with it, as it'll make your outfit appear like it's wearing you, instead of you wearing it.

Blazers work great for the fall because they're trendy, yet still keep you warm until Winter comes. There are many different styles for both men and women, and the range of fabrics are broad (try tweed).

Sleeveless coats are great because they easily rest over any outfit you feel like wearing, dressy or casual. They might not keep you warm, but they will keep some of chill off your shoulders and make you look comfy.

Fur is back, for both men and women. You can find it on the insides of coats and on collars. Try to avoid cheap fur that looks thin. Also, don't go overboard by getting an all-fur coat unless you're planning on pairing it with a dress and some tights.

Motorcycle jackets aren't reserved for leather. This look goes great on men and looks fitted with the tight sleeves. Avoid zipping it up and wear something that's longer underneath. Pairing it with boots also works.

Fall in love with fashion

SHOES
Don't resort back to your old Uggs that you bought in the eighth grade. It's time to dress it up a little more, snow or not, and keep your toes warm in some booties. These things are all over the place, between Urban Outfitters and Bakers you're sure to find yourself a pair. Also, try some moccasins because they're warm and come in great colors like browns and mustards. Minnetonka moccasins are great because they're more authentic and last forever. For men, old construction boots look great with a dark pair of jeans.

COATS/JACKETS
Leather jackets are all the rave right now. Weather pleather or the real thing, you can dress up any outfit by wearing it over plaid button-ups or long sleeves. Blazers area also hitting the runways, including jean jackets. There are a variety of options for jackets so please don't resort to drowning yourself in an over sized coat, unless you get a form-fitting peacoat.

SKIRTS

Don't ditch your skirts just because the holiday season is coming around. Zip-up jean and leather skirts are great to pair with tights (like we mention below) and go great with chunky gold, eighties-inspired jewelry. Plus, you can always re-wear them during any season for the nightlife.

VESTS
Just because they don't keep you cozy doesn't mean you need to put them away. Vests are great to wear over hoodies and sweaters. If anything, they'll be an extra layer--even if it's a light one.

SCARVES
Trends come and go, but scarves don't. They've been hanging in there and even in the summer people wear them. This Fall Eternity scarves are really popular, and at Anthropologie you can find worn looking ones.

TIGHTS
If you're not ready to toss out your shorts or skirts, wear tights under your basic summer attire. Anthropologie, Forever 21, and Nordstrom all carry lovely floral tights and designs that will keep you both fashionable and warm.
